Noku set up her business Seka Candles in August 2020.
She shares what inspired her to start her candle-making business which celebrates women’s bodies and why everyone can bring their own uniqueness to their business.
How was the idea for Seka Candles conceived?
The inspiration for Seka Candles grew from not only being a candle lover but finding a sense of peace and tranquillity through candles.
I had struggled mentally for a long period and at my lowest was introduced to meditation during therapy and coaching.
I soon became passionate about health, wellbeing and mindfulness which led me to Seka Candles. The brand stemmed from my intentions to bring the peace and tranquillity that I found in candles and my desire to deliver that to others.
The name Seka derives from the Shona Language in Zimbabwe which means “to laugh” and that’s what the brand is about laughter, positivity, and joy.
Why did you decide to make the candles in the female form?
For me, I think the female body is one of the beautiful forms of art.
The moulds come from suppliers, but I do get choose which body shapes I like, I’m currently obsessed with the thick curvy one I think it represents the bodies of most women in the 21st century!
How do you come up with the scents?
I chose the scents that I’m most attracted to! And at times I do a poll on my story and ask my customers/followers which scents they would like.
What’s it like running your own business?
Running my own business has been a full-on rollercoaster and one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s so rewarding.
However, there are times when I just want to scream when things go wrong, but when things go right and when I get feedback from all the customers, I remember why I first started and enjoy every second of it because it really helps bring out my creative side.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to set up their own business?
Don’t overthink your product or business plan, even if there are thousands of other people with the same idea, there’s only one you!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I know that growing up it always seemed like you were different from everyone else, and it felt like no one really understood you. I want you to know that your uniqueness is what makes you, you.
You don’t need love or validation from anyone else but yourself and you’re going to go to amazing places, meet amazing people and be loved like you’ve never been loved before. All will be okay.
