I set up my business Platinum Dog Training around four months ago now. It had always been a dream of mine to become a dog trainer open my own school and now seemed like the perfect time.
I have always loved animals and I really got into dogs when I use to lodge at a trainer’s house.
At Platinum Dog Training, we offer a range of classes from adult dogs to puppies, 1-2-1 training and online services such as masterclasses and workshops.
Challenges and misconceptions
Impostor syndrome was huge to overcome, the feeling of am I good enough and can I do this?
I often get told “you are so lucky just getting to cuddle puppies all day” it always makes me chuckle as my job can be extremely challenging.
What I love most about the job is watching an owner and dog build up a strong bond and really start to understand each other. It’s absolutely magical.
Becoming a dog trainer
I started my training in New Zealand back in 2016 and have been learning ever since. With dog training it’s constantly evolving so there’s always so much to learn!
If you want to be a dog trainer, find a force-free dog trainer and shadow them. Learn as much as you can about science-based methods. Don’t listen to TikTok or YouTube trainers who often aren’t qualified or use outdated methods.
Advice I’d give to my younger self
Oh man, where do I even start! I was a very under-confident younger person and struggled so much with even speaking in front of a class that was my worst nightmare.
My advice would be to take a deep breath and just believe in yourself. Don’t not listen to the voice in your head that’s scared to fail and just take that leap!
